1. What is the "Required Document Guide"?

The "Required Document Guide" is a quick way to identify what documents you need to provide to satisfy Department of Public Safety requirements for a license or ID. As you select documents, a green check appears under the satisfied requirements. Continue until all the columns contain green checks.

2. What if I cannot proceed with this application?

Even if you cannot proceed with this application, use the "Required Document Guide" to identify the documents to bring to the Driver’s License office. Please take original copies of the identified documents to a Driver’s License office and discuss your situation with an examiner.

6. What forms of payment are accepted at the Department of Public Safety office?

Acceptable payments are in cash, credit card (MasterCard and Visa) and debit card. Checks are not accepted.

7. Do I have to be a certain age to renew my driver's license online?

Yes.The youngest is 16 years - 10 months to renew online. Individuals over 18 can renew their license six months prior to the expiration date.

8. Can I renew my license online if it is expired?

Yes. You are able to renew a license online up to one year after the expiration date. This means that if a person's license expires on January 1, 2002, they have until midnight January 1, 2003 to renew their license online. A surcharge will be added to those online renewals made after the expiration date.

9. Must I have a certain license Class to renew online?

Yes. Your license must be a Class R to renew online.

10. Can I renew online if I have Restrictions on my license?

A license cannot be renewed online if the user has a Restriction D. (Requires re-examination before renewal.)

11. How much does it cost to renew my license online?

For Class R renewals, the standard $24.00 renewal fee applies whether in person or online. If the license is expired, there is a late fee surcharge of $1.00. For online renewals, there is an additional convenience fee that varies based on the total purchase amount and a postage and handling fee of $1.50.

12. How long will it take to receive my new license in the mail?

You should receive your new license within 7 to 10 business days. It will be mailed to the address that appears on your current license. If you do not receive it in 7 to 10 business days, please contact the Department of Public Safety.

13. Can I renew my license online every time it needs to be renewed?

No. You can renew your license online every-other time you renew your license. If you renew your license online, you will not be able to renew online again until you have made a renewal in person.

14. Can I change the last name or address on my license online?

No. You must go to the Department of Public Safety to make any changes to the information on your license.

15. How do I get a license if I am a new resident of the State of Mississippi?

You must visit the nearest driver's license office to apply for a Mississippi license. You must present a valid out-of-state license, proof of domicile and your Social Security card or a print out from the Social Security office in order to apply. Written and skills tests may be waived.

17. Can I pay all of my reinstatement fees online?

No. Only the fees for failure to appear and failure to pay type violations and implied consent violations, $25.00, $100.00 and $175.00 can be paid online. Fees for Bad Checks cannot be paid online.

18. If I pay my reinstatement fees online is my license valid?

No. Paying reinstatement fees, whether online or in person, does not necessarily mean that your license is then valid. Reinstating your license is a 4 step process:

  1. You must clear your record and pay the fine at the court for the county in which your ticket was issued.
  2. You must pay the MDPS reinstatement fee (either in person or using this online application).
  3. MDPS must receive confirmation from the court that your record has been cleared. This can take up to several weeks. To speed this process, you may mail your copy of the Court Abstract form to MDPS, Attn: Driver Records, 1900 E. Woodrow Wilson, Jackson, MS. 39216.
  4. MDPS will then reinstate your license.
Once the above steps are completed, a clearance letter is mailed to the address on your current license (Note: Mail may not be forwarded or mailed to a PO Box).

19. If I purchase my motor vehicle report online, and I find that I have no record of violations, can I be refunded the $11.00 fee for the report?

No. The application requests payment after it has found an individual's record and before it displays the record to the individual. This report shows not only the moving violations on the record, but the status of the license, which is also subject to the $11.00 fee. This transaction also requires the payment of a convenience fee.
